about

This is the fifth single release from Mark Davenport's album "Joyful Sighs & Soulful Hymns." The "Single" version has been remixed and mastered and fuses the two album track versions. In addition to Mark's vocal and piano work, the single features guitarist David Snider, Pedal Steeler Daniel Jones, drummer Christian Teele, and viola da gambist Wendy Gillespie. Following the concept of the other songs on Davenport's CD, which draw on Renaissance models, "When the Heart is Broken" is based on a 16th-century madrigal by Jacques Arcadelt.

When The Heart Is Broken - Single
©2015 Words & Music by Mark Davenport (ASCAP)
On a madrigal by Jacques Arcadelt (ca. 1504 – ca. 1567)

Ahimé, Ahimé, dov e’l bel viso
Where is the sweet face
Where love once made her nest
And where lay all my hopes?
Where is the beautiful face
That held the whole world
With such grace?
Who’s hiding it from me?

Oh luck, oh fortune
Oh greedy death
Blind, pitiless
And stone cold deaf

Where are the tears, when the well is empty?
Where is the comfort, when the bed is cold?
Where is the hope, when the mind is weary?
Where is the love, when the heart is broken?

Oh where, is my treasure now
And who has stolen my heart?
Where is it hiding?
Where is she
Who no more answers me?

Oh luck, oh fortune
Oh greedy death
Blind, merciless
And stone cold deaf

Where are the tears, when the well is empty?
Where is the comfort, when the bed is cold?
Where is the time, when its echoes are endless?
Where is the light, when there’s only darkness?

Where is the hope, when the mind is weary?
Where is the love, when the heart is broken?
